Spruce Mountain schools will once again offer free meals to all students this year, thanks to a four-year federal program that allows schools to establish claiming percentages and serve meals at no charge.


In other local news, Gifford's Ice Cream announced that its Farmington location has closed permanently. The beloved spot will be missed by many who have enjoyed it for decades.


Lastly, the 14-mile Whistle Stop Trail from Jay to West Farmington is back open more than a year after flooding closed sections in June 2023.

Gifford's Ice Cream has permanently closed its Farmington location, the company announced Wednesday. The store first opened in 1982.


Selectpersons in Wilton voted Tuesday to approve a place for boats to “clean, drain and dry” their watercrafts in an effort to prevent invasive species, including zebra mussels, from entering Wilson Pond.


The 14-mile Whistle Stop Trail from Jay to West Farmington is fully open, thanks to volunteers from the Western Maine ATV Club who temporarily patched the trail in North Jay, according to club President Bob Dalot.


Jay selectpersons set the 2024-25 tax rate at $22 per $1,000 of assessed property valuation, which is $1 less than last year. The board used $250,000 from the undesignated fund to keep the tax rate down.


The Stanley Museum unveiled a rare portrait last week of a young Dr. Richard Henry Stubbs, created by the Stanley brothers in 1880 using an enlarged photographic print enhanced with charcoal and watercolors.

RSU 9 Superintendent Christian Elkington shared a welcome letter for the students entering school in the fall. Read his full letter here.


All Spruce Mountain students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch this year through the Special Provision II program, according to RSU 73 Food Service Director Laura Merrill.


The annual "Packs for Progress" event put on by the United Way of the Tri-Valley Area, saw only a third of its usual number of sign ups this year.

THINGS TO DO

Join Franklin County Animal Shelter for the much-awaited “Strut For Strays” timed 5k run event Sept. 7 at Titcomb Mountain.


Need a trim? You can get a free haircut every third Tuesday of the month from 1 to 4 p.m. at St. Joseph Parish Hall, put on by the Franklin County Recovery Center.


The Industry Senior Social is now the “All Ages Potluck Social". The social will be held the third Thursday of each month. Lunches will continue through November or maybe through the winter, if there is enough interest.


A parade of Model T cars will stop at the Phillips Historical Museum on Thursday, Sept. 5, so the drivers can take a break and allow visitors to wander around the cars and explore the Phillips Historical House.


The Essentials Closet ministry at Old South Church in Farmington offers personal care products free of charge to people in the greater Farmington area who are having trouble making ends meet. The Closet will be open from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28.
