As a former wedding photographer, the Public Theaer's Annual Valentine Ball event felt like millions of weddings I've worked over the years, filled with energy and joy.

I scanned the dance floor, looking for dancers enjoying themselves. Once I found the right moment, I worked the scene until I got a shot that I was happy with. Then, I made my way through the crowd to gather names and ages.

It’s always special to be at an event which celebrates families coming together. The kids especially love the theater of it all.

A heart banner, courtesy of the Valentine Bandit, is seen Feb. 14, 2020, on the First Parish Church on Congress Street in Portland. The anonymous band of cupids collectively known as the Valentine’s Day Phantom, or sometimes the Valentine Bandit, sweeps through the city in the dark of night, leaving shop windows and buildings decorated with bright red hearts. It’s a beloved tradition that began in the mid-1970s
