April 20, 2025

Last weekend, the Midcoast lost JoAnn Miller, part of the famed trio known as the Freeport Flag Ladies. For nearly 20 years, Miller, Elaine Greene and Carmen Footer gathered every Tuesday at the intersection of Main and School streets in Downtown Freeport to wave American Flags. The tradition started in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

Next Tuesday, March 4, people will gather to pay their respects at the same intersection where the Flag Ladies gathered for years. Among them will be Elaine Greene, the last remaining Freeport Flag Lady. Footer died in March of 2023.

We'll have a reporter there.

A proposal to add more recreation options on a 230-acre preserve in East Brunswick is sparking debate. The land, formerly home to Maine Gravel & Captain Fitzgerald Land Parcels, has the potential to include a playground, playing fields, trails and a fishing/swimming area. But some are concerned that the development and increased foot traffic could harm local ecology and wildlife.

Current signage asks pet owners to always leash dogs at the park. One of the recreational options proposed for these parcels in East Brunswick includes a dog park. Kristian Moravec / The Times Record

Also this week, we brought you a story about a promising sign for the Sheepscot River's long struggling salmon population. An early nest count reveals numbers are growing, likely the result of a decade of efforts to remove bever dams and other obstructions on the river.

In an unusual story, Bath police have summonsed a Phippsburg man for leaving graffiti around Downtown Bath. Not that unusual, but this graffiti, ranging from hearts to messages against hate, carried some strangely positive messages. But tagging is tagging. The damage amounted to more than $2,000, police said, so the charge was elevated to aggravated, making it a felony. .

PHOTO OF THE WEEK

Newsletter reader Glenn Michaels captured this photo of snow piled up along Pleasant Street in Downtown Brunswick earlier this month. We'll see these snowbanks shrink a bit in the next few days as things briefly warm up!  Have a photo you'd like to contribute to Midcoast Now? Send it to editor@timesrecord.com.

THE WAY IT WAS IN THE MIDCOAST

Feb. 27, 1984:  Here's a fun feature from 41 years ago, a group of Bath Iron Works workers had a band and put out a record called "BIW Blues." The story includes some lyrics, and let's just say they're not necessarily what you want to get motivated on a Monday morning.

Would love to know if someone has a copy of this record lying around, or if they know any of the shipbuilders involved.
