I was in a Zoom meeting when someone exclaimed, "You'll be in Maine on March 23? that's the best day of the year — it's Maine Maple Sunday!"

This reminded me of a photo I took years ago of a group of preschoolers visiting a sugar shack. You could barely see their little heads behind a tall wooden table, but every one of them had their index finger pointed out waiting for their first taste of the season's syrup. I was (and still am) enchanted by that moment.

The weather looks perfect this weekend and better still — the sap is running!

Head over to Velvet Hollow Sugar Works in Greenwood, open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. The Dunham's serve a gluten-free breakfast in the morning and starting at noon, the menu switches to BBQ maple turkey chili and cornbread and vegan chili.

On Sunday you can also visit Swain's Family Farm in Bethel, where you can learn about sugaring from Oxford Hills Senior Megan Millet, who's chosen Maine Maple Sunday for her senior project. She'll be there to answer your questions alongside Farmer Ed Swain who will be serving maple syrup drizzled over vanilla ice cream. Mmm!

In this week's newsletter: Read about Bethel's Olivia Cuneo who offers coffee and conversation from a converted horse cart; find out where to go line dancing and more.

Thanks for reading,

Rose Lincoln

LOCAL NEWS

Summerfest will be called Molly Ockett Day again starting this August. The annual Bethel festival had been renamed Summerfest in 2020, after fifty years as Molly Ockett Day. Bethel Area Business Association returned the Molly Ockett name after taking the reins from Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce.

Andover town officials are ironing out the last details of a warrant they will present to voters asking them whether they want to create a new town manager position. The vote will take place April 12 during a Special Town Meeting.

West Paris Water Department Clerk Clairluz Perez Lisboa, was placed on paid leave. The decision followed an executive session as part of an emergency meeting at the Town Office on Kingsbury Street. Two days later, she was reinstated.

Telstar High School senior Emma Newell was awarded the coveted Principal's Award. Principal John Eliot said Newell is distinguished academically in the classroom, as a leader in student council and as a leader in the community.

Andover Code Enforcement Officer Tim Johnson asked the Andover Select Board to adopt a junk yard ordinance. It would give the town more "bite and teeth" in court while facing violators, he said at the March 11 select board meeting.
