There's a new dance craze this week that has been seen from Paris to Mexico to the Oxford County Sheriff's Office β€” the PD shuffle.Β

Mike Ward, who retired as Oxford's police chief in 2022, will start as chief of the Paris Police Department in September.

Michael Dailey, Paris' former police chief, has been hired as an Oxford County Sheriff's Office deputy. Dailey left the Paris department last month, following a car chase and shootout with an escaped prisoner in May.

The Oxford County Commissioners also approved the hiring of two more new deputies. Derek MacDonald and Ashley Rich will both move over from the now-defunct Mexico Police Department.

County Commissioner Steve Merrill endorsed the hirings, noting that it is difficult to find qualified applicants to hire as sheriff's deputies.

OXFORD HILLS CLASS OF '74 REUNION

"Once a Viking, always a Viking." A group from Oxford Hills High School's Class of '74 donned their gear and invaded Lake Pennesseewassee Saturday. Brian Otterson steered his classmates around the lake on Maine's only dragon boat as part of their 50th year reunion.Β Contributed photo

SCHOOL NEWS

It sounds like a great time was had by all at the Oxford Hills High School Class of 1974 reunion. Not surprising since the class motto was: "We don't know where we're going, but we're on our way."

The Oxford Hills School District has set a third budget referendum vote for Oct. 8, after the budget was voted down twice.

In Norway, the select board honored hometown hero Jared Cash for serving on the school board for 12 years. Cash is currently the president and CEO of the Mitchell Institute.

MORE GOOD NEWS

The water in West Paris is safe to drink for the first time since April. Shoutout to Bill Gardner, who is currently serving as water district superintendent for both West Paris and Gray. As a West Paris resident, I want to thank him for his continued hard work!

Norway is moving ahead with its ongoing replacement of 1913 clay sewer lines after a bond was approved at a special town meeting.

Oxford residents voted to continue in-person annual town meetings rather than shift to an all ballot voting system.Β

COMMUNITY VOICES/AROUND TOWN

There was a joyous, celebratory mood in the basement of the Norway Christ Episcopal Church during the last of six weekly cooking classes. It was a lot of fun and I learned a lot about common sense healthy eating and grocery shopping.

THINGS TO DO

An exhibition of Maine photographer Bev Stevens' work will be on display at the West Paris Public Library starting Wednesday, Aug. 28.

The McLaughlin Garden and Homestead in South Paris is hosting a mushroom foraging event with author Frank Hyman on Thursday. Hyman is the author of a guide that sounds the extremely practical: "How to Forage For Mushrooms Without Dying: An Absolute Beginner’s Guide."

THE WAY IT WAS IN OXFORD HILLS

Feb. 18, 2021: In recent years recruitment and retention for police departments in Maine and across the U.S. has become more and more of a challenge.

Perhaps that PD shuffle isn't such a new dance after all. The ripple effects of the COVID-19 pandemic continue to be felt everywhere, including in law enforcement.
