Cony field hockey players pose at their end of their performance in the dance competition at Saturday's play day at Winslow High School. Anna Chadwick/Morning Sentinel

While some of us have been digging around for an extra blanket as the nights get cooler, Maine high schools have been unearthing balls, sticks, helmets and other equipment as fall sports practice heats up.

There may no games (yet), but there's plenty to talk about:

Repeat: And we’re not talking about those Friends marathons on TV, either. "Repeat" is on the minds of 2023 state champions from football, field hockey and 8-on-8 soccer.

New coaches: Yarmouth boys soccer is adjusting to life following the departure of Mike Hagerty and his 14 state titles; and Richmond enters a new era after the retirement of longtime girls coach Troy Kendrick and his 11 championships.

New team: Winthrop girls soccer has a team of its own after having co-oped with Monmouth since 2019.

Dialing it to 11: Brunswick and Maranacook football are returning to 11-man football after playing in the 8-on-8 ranks.

It’s awesome, baby!: Teams from Winthrop, Morse and Edward Little opened practice with their own version of “Midnight Madness.

Dance fever: The Central Maine Field Hockey Play Day is more than just stickwork and kick saves — it’s also about kicking up your heels on the dance floor (or is that dance field?).

For all the latest coverage, you can turn to the Sun Journal, Central Maine, The Forecaster, Times Record and the Portland Press Herald.

Enjoy your week, and catch some rays before summer slips away.
