Have you ever wondered how people found their way around before GPS?
I came across the postcard below in my mother’s collection. This photo of the “international” signpost at the intersection of Routes 5 and 35 was probably taken sometime in the 1950s.
Recently, I asked someone where I could find his friend, an East Bethel resident. His response, “Do you know where Mr. Howe lives?”
Aren’t there at least a hundred Howes in Bethel?, I thought to myself.
When he saw my puzzled look, he kept going.
“It’s across from the log cabin.” Hmm, there are a lot of log cabins, I thought.
“There’s a carved eagle out front,” he added.
Okay, now we’re getting somewhere. I should be able to find this guy ... I hope!
I picture someone in the 1950s stopping at the international sign for a photo, then knocking on someone’s door for directions — probably similar to the ones I was getting.
It’s funny how, in the end, the more things change, the more they stay the same!
