A shout-out to my book club, which always has the best food! We met on Sunday, to discuss Maine writer Debra Spark's latest novel, "Discipline." (Debra made a guest appearance!) The meal included Coconut Curry Chickpeas with Pumpkin and Lime, Roasted Cauliflower with Zhug, Red Cabbage with Walnuts and Feta, and Claudia Roden's famous orange-almond cake. (The cake recipe went viral a few years ago, many decades after Roden first put it in a cookbook.)

I swear I did not join this particular book club because of the food, but boy did I luck out! We don't do anything coy, like try to match the meal we are eating with the book we are reading. We've simply grouped three of my favorite things: good food, good books and good conversation (we are definitely not silent). Our monthly meeting is food for body and soul - trite but true.

If former Portland Poet Laureate Marcia F. Brown hadn't got there before me with her excellent 2015 book "Well Read, Well Fed: A Year of Great Reads and Simple Dishes for Book Groups," I might have written it myself.
