THIS MONTH: THE COLOR BLUE

BRIANNA SOUKUP/PRESS HERALD

A patio on a home along Fortunes Rocks Beach was severely damaged by the storm surge during the wind and rain storm that whipped across Maine on Jan. 10. The photo perfectly captures this month's blue theme. View more photos from the storm.

I was walking along Fortunes Rocks Beach just before sunset looking for damage from the Jan. 10 storm but couldn’t see much from the beach side. Realizing I only had 15-20 minutes of blue hour left - the term photographers use for dusk - before it got truly dark, I quickly headed back to my car.

I drove down the road but it was blocked off after about a mile. I found a town worker, explained who I was and what I was looking for, and he led me a bit past the barrier so I could get photos of storm damage.

As we got close to the house where I took this photo, the flood lights automatically came on, perfectly illuminating the destroyed patio. It was a small lighting change that made the photo just a bit more interesting.
