A woman and her 12-year-daughter living in Skowhegan are afraid they may be deported back to Venezuela, a country they left in 2023. Marbelis Villamil said she and her daughter had come to the U.S. legally, hoping to stay, but they became fearful when the Trump administration started acting on a promise to conduct mass deportations.

In other news, Redington-Fairview General Hospital is set to expand, Mainers are getting the flu and skijoring action returned to Skowhegan.

REDINGTON-FAIRVIEW GENERAL HOSPITAL

The Planning Board approved the hospital’s plans to add a 24,000-square-foot medical office building and two parking lots on Jones Street. A hospital representative said construction is expected to start in April and last about two years.

SOMERSET COUNTY JAIL

A Somerset County Jail transport officer had his work-issued firearm taken away by court order and is now facing a misdemeanor charge of domestic violence assault. The officer was placed on leave pending an internal affairs investigation, the subject of which remains confidential.

INFLUENZA IN MAINE

Are you one of the thousands of Mainers who have caught the flu in recent weeks? State data shows influenza is spreading rapidly across the state. As you could probably guess, February is often a month when Maine experiences the most new infections. 

SCHOOL BOARD DISPUTE

A dispute between Norridgewock and MSAD 54 over whether a school board member is eligible to serve will not be settled by the office of Attorney General Aaron M. Frey. The two sides requested his office’s interpretation of state statute, but Frey said it was not his place to offer an opinion.

SKIJOR SKOWHEGAN

The largest Skijor Skowhegan was held Saturday at the Skowhegan Fairgrounds. The annual time-trial race attracted thousands who watched horses pull people on skis and snowboards.

AROUND TOWN: COMPREHENSIVE PLAN

Town officials are updating Skowhegan’s Comprehensive Plan and want feedback. This survey is open until Feb. 28. Find more information on the town’s Facebook page and contact town planner Melanie Weston with any questions.
