I spent last week in Nashville in seminars and lectures with 19 other young journalists from California to New Hampshire as part of the Dow Jones Early Career Training Program fellowship.
Some of our conversations — like about how to responsibly cover crime or how to take care of ourselves so we can keep doing this job — were difficult. But one recurring conversation was always really easy: telling those other young journalists about Hallowell. The historic brick downtown, the parades, the Kennebec River — and you all.
I like to brag about our little city. Thanks for making it braggable.
See y'all next week,

OLD FIRE STATION |
A request for proposals to renovate the Second Street fire station has officially been sent out, a major step in the future of the historic building and the hundreds of fire department artifacts inside.
It's the second time the city has tried to offload the station; the first attempt ended in 2020 with only one bid, which the city rejected. Residents then approved a nonbinding referendum in 2022 to have the city keep the station and renovate it — a scenario that has become increasingly unlikely as the city's budget tightens. |
POST-ROE MAINE
|
A bill in the state legislature would allow doctors who prescribe abortion medication to keep their names off of labels — a change advocates say would help protect them from legal risks and attacks.
Lawmakers held a public hearing Wednesday on the bill, which would permit doctors to use the name of the health care facility they work for on the prescription label rather than their own name, as is currently required by state law. |

THINGS TO DO |
-
RSU 2 will hold a community input meeting tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. at Hall-Dale High School on its fiscal year 2026 budget. Last year's school budget made up almost half of the city's spending and tax impact.
-
The county's budget committee will hold its sixth meeting this Wednesday at 6 p.m. at 125 State St. in Augusta. The committee will consider community feedback from last week's public hearings and discuss potential changes to the budget.

COMMUNITY UPDATES
|
-
North Bay Recycling Center was in pretty poor condition earlier this week — as seen on the city's Facebook page. Officials and recycling advocates alike are asking us all to take better care of that facility.
-
If you saw the overturned vehicle on Winthrop Street on Tuesday and were curious, the driver was charged with operating without a license, operating with a suspended registration, failing to maintain control of a motor vehicle and failing to display a valid inspection. She was distracted and trying to avoid a stopped school bus.
