A press release in my inbox this week has informed me that Feb. 23 is National Banana Bread Day. The world is a tough place lately, so I will take all the holidays I can get, silly or not. Over the weekend, on the Presidents Day holiday, I failed to make any past U.S. presidents' favorite foods, or at least eaten-on-the-Maine-campaign-trail foods; I may remedy that this week by baking Channel 8 TV reporter Jim Keithley's grandmother's Foolproof Banana Bread recipe.

I wish I could raise an apt toast, too, but, alas, the Saco-based Barreled Souls Brewing no longer makes its Banana Lasers Imperial Stout, with, per its website, "strong graham cracker flavors with sweet, creamy vanilla ice cream flavor on a banana split. Close to banana cream pie flavors." How did I miss tasting that?
